Founded in 1926, the museum's original structure was built in the Spanish Colonial-style. It boast works by El Greco, Rubens and van Ruisdael, and has an eclectic collection with an emphasis on South Asian art, Indian miniatures and contemporary California paintings. Visitors to the museum will love the broad appeal of the exhibits, and families will enjoy investigating the collections with the "Private Eye Gallery Cards" and the free Family Festival, which features interactive art projects, live entertainment and free tours of the exhibitions.

To get here from the North, Take Interstate 5 South. Exit on Sassafras Street (Airport exit). Continue to Laurel Street (stoplight). Turn left and follow Laurel Street over the bridge into Balboa Park. The Museum is on the left-hand side (North end) of the plaza where the road dead-ends.
