Many art museums are a window to the past, but the San Diego Art Institute rightfully calls itself "Museum of the Living Artist."
The San Diego Art Institute showcases the work of emerging visual artists from the San Diego area through a program of over 30 juried shows a year. A new exhibition of works opens every four to six weeks in the 10,000-square-foot gallery, and solo artist exhibitions are also featured. The David Fleet Young Artists Gallery displays youth art from San Diego schools.
More than just a venue to display their work, the San Diego Art Institute provides programming to foster a sense of community and exchange between artists of all levels. For example, visual artists of all levels, styles and mediums are invited to inspire and be inspired at the monthly "Paint Out!" hosted at Balboa Park and the San Diego Japanese Friendship Gardens. Professional artists hold interactive demonstrations in the museum itself, a great opportunity for the public to experiment with the tools of the trade or get technical tips. Many of these events and demonstrations are free. The gallery store offers jewelry and gift items made by local artists.
The San Diego Art Institute is located just off the Cabrillo Freeway and adjacent to Balboa Park.
