Located in downtown San Diego in the heart of Navy Pier, the San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum is a maritime museum that boasts over 60 exhibits, 3 state-of-the-art simulators, and restored aircraft that bring the magic of naval aviation to life.
The museum consists of the USS Midway aircraft carrier, the longest-serving aircraft carrier in US Navy History and served for over 47 years, ending in Kuwait in 1991. It's a great piece of naval history that comes to life with the volunteers on board who tell the story of the Midway and Navy life at sea. Visitors can tour the ship's bridge, flight deck, hangar deck, mess deck, primary flight control, Tactical Flag Command Center, enlisted and junior officer quarters, the captain's and admiral's quarters, sickbay, and an engine room. Check out the radio rooms where static is a way of life, or the Brig and see what it's like being in jail at sea.
In addition, several restored aircraft are on display on the hangar deck and on the flight deck. There's an SH-3 Sea King, an H-46 Sea Knight helicopter, the F9F Cougar plane and the SBD Dauntless Dive Bomber, the plane that won the battle of Midway. Scale the ladder of the T-2 Buckeye and see what's like to be catapulted to 150 miles per hour in just three seconds. Be sure not to miss the special simulators in which you can either fly with the Blue Angels or head against the enemy in a full scale operation. Self-guided audio tours are included with every admission featuring Midway veterans who share their stories of living and working aboard a massive aircraft carrier. The San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum also offers docent-led tours to groups of up to 40 people, but reservations must be made two weeks in advance.
The Fantail Café is sure to satisfy your appetite and at the Jet Shop you can purchase all kinds of exciting Navy Air Force items.
Conveniently located alongside the Navy Pier with Amtrak three blocks away and within walking distance of the cruise ship terminal, the San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum is easy to reach. Exit I-5 south onto E Harbor Dr. and make a right following the coast. West Harbor Dr. turns into North Harbor Dr. Keep straight on and you'll hit the museum. There are nearby lots all around.
Get ready to embark on a one-of-a-kind museum experience.
