Our Museum Expert Says:

Explore one of the country's finest collections of American and European art created since 1940 at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.

The museum has 3 locations including a main downtown branch built in 1986 by one of Japan's top architects. The bright galleries with exposed vaults display fine artwork and exhibits of primarily American and European contemporary art, created since 1940. Selections from the museum's permanent collection of 5,000 objects in all visual media are showcased in the galleries throughout the year, and range from masterpieces of abstract expressionism and pop art to recent works by young and emerging artists.

The museum's Panza Collection showcases genres such as abstract expressionism, pop art, assemblage, eccentric abstraction, and postminimalism, and contains the works the works of Jean Fautrier, Franz Kline, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Mark Rothko, George Segal, and Antoni Tàpies. Visitors can enjoy guided tours led by artists and critics.

The Museum of Contemporary Art houses a great onsite restaurant, Patinette, at the Grand Ave. location, which serves delicious Mediterranean cuisine. Do check out the schedule in advance, since some shows sell out, especially on weekends, and the museum occasionally closes for exhibit installation.
