Located in the San Diego Bay, the centerpiece of the Maritime museum's extensive collection is the 'Star of India,' an 1863 iron bark which has hands-on and visual displays about sailing, living and working on ships. The Age of Steam exhibit incorporates features of the ferryboat 'Berkeley' - part of the technological revolution of steam power. The Harvesting the Ocean exhibit is all about the growth and decline of commercial fishing out of San Diego, teaching visitors about the technology and the people who built the San Diego tuna industry, one of the biggest in the world. Kid visitors will love the Pirates of the Pacific exhibit, which shows artifacts, pictures and hands-on exhibits on board the HMS Surprise and focuses on Chinese pirates that threatened merchant ships in the South China Sea for nearly 100 years. Be sure to check out events such as Family Fun on the San Diego Bay where families can actually take a trip on the historic 1914 harbor Pilot boat.
The Maritime Museum of San Diego is located on Harbor Drive near the corner of Ash Street just a few blocks West of Interstate 5, and if using public transportation, the County Center/Little Italy trolley station on the blue line is only two blocks from the museum.
