Our Museum Expert Says:

Stroll a giant Hall of American History, explore two massive hallways lined with spectacular wildlife dioramas, and meet a genuine Egyptian mummy, named Pu! The Los Angeles County Natural History Museum is the largest the largest natural and historical museum in the western United States, a chronicle of billions of years of history, that should not be missed!

With its distinctive main building and fitted marble walls, the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum is on the National Register of Historic Places. The 35-hall warehouse of Earth's history, chronicles the planet and its inhabitants from 4.5 billion years ago to the present day, and houses more than 35 million specimens and artifacts. The 3 floors of permanent exhibits include popular displays devoted to animal habitats, dinosaurs, pre-Colombian cultures, and the Ralph M. Parsons Discovery Center.

Over the years, the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum has built additions onto its original building. The domed rotunda features a bronze sculpture of the three Muses holding up the world, representing the three subject areas to which the museum was dedicated in 1913. This hall is among the most distinctive locales in Los Angeles and has often been used as a filming location.

Kids and adults alike will love the trademark symbol of the museum, the "Dueling Dinos," a Tyrannosaurus Rex and Triceratops skeletons poised in a realistic stance. The kid-friendly Discovery Center will also entertain children with its hands-on, interactive exhibits. Kids can make fossil rubbings, dig for fossils, and view live animals such as snakes and lizards. The museum's best permanent displays include the world's rarest shark, a walk-through vault containing priceless gems (including the largest collection of gold in the United States), and an Insect Zoo. Be sure to refuel at the Museum Café to ensure you have the energy to see all the amazing exhibits!

The Natural History Museum is located at 900 Exposition Boulevard in Exposition Park, across from the University of Southern California (USC) between Vermont and Figueroa. Take the Exposition Blvd. exit off the Harbor Freeway (110) and head west.
