Spend an afternoon filled with the arts, in a classic California bungalow with magnificent water views! From modernism to decorative arts and a rich ceramics collection, the Long Beach Museum of Art is sure to delight!
Located on Ocean Blvd. on a magnificent bluff-top site overlooking Long Beach Harbor and the Pacific Ocean, the Long Beach Museum of Art occupies the historic 1912 Elizabeth Milbank Anderson house and carriage house and a new two-story pavilion, including lovely oceanfront gardens. The building is a classic example of the California Craftsman Bungalow, with its natural materials and rugged texture of wood shingles and clinker brick with prominent gables and projecting rafter beams.
The permanent collection at the Long Beach Museum of Art includes 3,000 paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics, works on paper, and decorative arts objects (furnishings and accessories). The best exhibits include American decorative arts objects, the early 20th century European art, California Modernism, and contemporary art of California. The Museum also offers extensive educational programs for children and adults, as well as musical programs and festivals, and a children's art gallery.
Take your time and enjoy a light lunch at Claire's at the Museum, which connects to an outdoor patio surrounding Claire Falkenstein's stunning water sculpture, "Structure and Flow".
To reach the Long Beach Museum of Art from the south, take 405 north to the Seventh St. exit. Drive west on 7th Street to Junipero St., approximately 6 miles. Turn left and continue 6 blocks to Ocean Blvd, and make a left. The museum parking lot will be on your right.
