Come explore the Art Mecca of the West! From its hillside location to its Italian travertine marble exterior, the J. Paul Getty Museum will leave art lovers tantalized.
Home to Western art dating from the Middle Ages to the Present, the Getty Museum houses European paintings, drawings, sculptures, illuminated manuscripts, decorative arts, and European and American photographs. The many collections can be enjoyed on the 45 minute curator-led tours, where visitors can see popular paintings such as Rembrandt's The Abduction of Europa, van Gogh's Irises, and Monet's Wheatstack. The nine buildings which make up the incredible complex opened to the public in 1997 and include a sophisticated system of programmable window louvers which allow many works to be displayed and enjoyed in natural light. While here, you can also enjoy a walk through the 134,000 square foot garden walk, and take the time to ponder the endless artistic treasures or just gaze into the reflecting pool adorned with Mickey Mouse-shaped azaleas.
The $1 billion art complex is also family-friendly and features a special Family Room, Gallery Games, storytelling, and weekend family workshops. It also contains puzzles, computers, picture books, games, and self-guided audio tours made specifically for families. Be sure to take advantage of the espresso/snack carts, cafeteria, self-service cafe, or the elegant (though informal) "Restaurant" which has breathtaking views overlooking the ocean and mountains of L.A.
The Metro bus 761 stops at the Getty main gate. If you're driving, exit I-405 at the Getty Center exit and follow the signs. Be aware that if the 405 is jammed (as it often is), Sepulvada Blvd. parallels it and may be the faster way to go. However long the wait, the J. Paul Getty Museum is a paradise of art, architecture, and culture sure to be loved by all.
