Come soak in the sun and enjoy one of the warmest and most inviting beach locations enjoyed by both tourists and locals alike. South Carlsbad State Beach boasts incredible hilltop sunsets over the Pacific and is perfect for swimming, surfing, boogie boarding, fishing and memorable evening strolls. There's an old-fashioned downtown area with antiques and small shops, as well as attractions like Legoland Theme Park and the San Diego Zoo nearby, so you're sure to find the perfect activity to fit your mood. The southernmost end of South Carlsbad State Beach (aka Ponto) has sections of beach that are clear of sand sometimes and the cobblestones left on the shore can hurt your feet, so bring your water or hiking shoes for traversing the stones and rough trails. Kids love to ride their bikes around the very popular campground, which is often sold out during summer months. There are 220 sites for tents and RVs on the bluffs overlooking the beach, complete with restrooms, water taps, fire rings, and picnic tables. There is a small convenience store for last minute shopping and a group campfire center too. Please note that unless you arrive in the middle of the week (or mid-winter), vacancies are scarce, so reserve well in advance. Also, remember to use only established stairways and marked trails to get to the beach because high tide floods can ruin your safe route back. Trails are typically found where clusters of cars are parked on the small turnouts along the highway.
