La Jolla Cove Beach - California

Things to do / Travel Guide

Address:La Jolla, California

Our Beach Bum Says:

Considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Southern California, La Jolla Cove is actually a tiny beach nook and part of the San Diego La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve. The Cove is surrounded by picturesque cliffs and offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. And the gentle waves here make activities like sunbathing, picnicking and reading all the more soothing. La Jolla Cove boasts some of the clearest water of all San Diego beaches which makes it ideal for scuba diving and snorkeling; in fact, water visibility at the Cove sometimes exceeds a depth of 30 feet. The calm water is even suitable for children who will delight at the sight of undersea life so close to shore. For the best underwater experience, arrive early so you can find a beach-nook to set down towels and gear. If you need, snorkeling gear rentals are available just a block or so away. During the summer months, lifeguards are present from 9:00 a.m. to dusk and due to the strong currents on the California beaches, its best to swim where a lifeguard can see you, to play it safe. When you're ready for land again, enjoy a picnic at the nearby Grassy Scripps Park or take a walk over to the Children's Pool Beach. Those who need a total break from the beach should also check out the San Diego County Museum of Modern Art, nearby. Do note when planning your trip that there's no public parking and street parking can be difficult to find, particularly in summer, but paid parking can be found downtown just a short walk from the La Jolla Cove Beach.
