Address:Corona Del Mar, California
Many who visit Corona Del Mar State Beach find the sandy shores and cozy coves quite familiar and in fact, many have seen these very beaches in movies and on TV in made-for-TV Disney productions and on Gilligan's Island. Or if you're a history or surfing buff, perhaps you know that the Big Corona was the site of the first major surf competition in Mainland America: the Pacific Coast Surf Riding Championships in 1928. Either way, you'll be pleased to discover that Corona Del Mar, a half mile long sandy beach framed by cliffs and a rock jetty, is a family beach with mild waves that are perfect for young swimmers. And "Little Corona", just a few blocks south, is a favorite spot for tidepools. This beach is a big attraction for bodysurfers and bodyboarders, and the many small, rugged coves north of Laguna Beach make for great snorkeling and scuba diving; and lifeguards are right here watching over swimmers. Those who enjoy their fun on land should head for the grassy parkland along the city's Main Beach to enjoy a game of basketball. When you're ready for a relaxing break from all the excitement, head for the hills above the beaches where there's a lookout point among the windy roads where you can take in spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean and bay. Also, don't miss the awesome sunsets here at the Big Corona, which are great accompanied by a light picnic or a fire. Before you pack up and get on your way, be aware that parking fills up fast here so do stay patient while you head for a fun-filled day at Big Corona.
