Things to do / Travel Guide
Southern California is home to some of the best wines on Earth. For the wine tasting enthusiast or for those simply with a taste for wine, no visit to the southern Californian coastal region is complete without an excursion out to a vineyard for sampling of their local “wares.” Many wineries in southern California allow visitors to enter tasting rooms for free. Some wineries even offer guided tours that explain the winemaking process.
The coastal areas around Santa Barbara are known for a climate that combines warm weather with ocean air, thus creating the best growing conditions for pinot noir, chardonnay, and riesling grapes. The city of Santa Barbara also offers a Downtown Art and Wine Tour that leads visitors to art galleries, local restaurants, and to various wineries for a wine tasting.
While not located in the heart of the region's wine country, the San Antonio Wineries are centrally located in the city of Los Angeles. Originally opened by a group of Franciscan Fathers of the early Spanish missions, these wineries were of the few in Los Angeles to survive the years of prohibition, and have been churning out fine Riboli wines ever since.
Located off Rancho California Road, just off the inland branch of Interstate Highway 15, are the 18 Temecula Wineries, many of which are award-winning, including the renowned Callaway Vineyard and Winery.
San Diego County is home to over 14 different wineries, the oldest of which is the Bernardo Winery.
