Things to do / Travel Guide
Southern California is one of the best places to live if you're a sports fan, as it is home to teams from all major spectator sports. Basketball fans in Los Angeles have their choice of Kobe Bryant's Lakers or the cross-town Clippers to root for, while baseball fans can take in a Dodgers or Angels game. Hockey has a major presence here too, with the NHL's Kings and Ducks taking the ice each season. The NFL's Chargers pack in the crowds about an hour and a half away in San Diego along with Major League Baseball's Padres. In addition, UCLA's Bruins and USC's Trojans have millions of supporters for the many sports teams in their athletic programs.
Many of the famed southern California beaches are the sites of major AVP volleyball events, while thoroughbred horseracing takes place at some of the sport's most well-known tracks like Santa Anita, Hollywood Park, and Los Alamitos. Soccer fans can take in an LA Galaxy game at the Rose Bowl, which also plays host to the yearly NCAA football Bowl game of the same name. ATP and WTA tennis events are held on some of the Southland's hardcourts in the summers, while boxing and rodeo also find a home in some southern California venues. Even fans of alternative sports are catered to, as they can catch the 2006 Summer X Games live at the Staples Center later this year.
The California Desert region's dry desert air also makes for good auto racing. The California Speedway is a D-shaped oval super-speedway located less than 50 miles from Los Angeles in Fontana. You can travel there twice a year to see great NASCAR racing action at the two Nextel Cup races sponsored by the California Speedway.
