The waters along the southern California coast offer many excellent snorkeling venues, with a virtual treasure trove of kelp beds, coral displays, and schools of colorful fish to see. From beginners to advanced level snorkelers, there are locations along the southern California coast that cater to everyone. It is relatively easy and cheap to rent a snorkel and fins, as there are plenty of concessionaires located close to snorkeling sites lining the southern California coastline. As water temperatures vary from time to time and from place to place, wet suits are always recommended for snorkeling.

La Jolla, just north of San Diego, along with Catalina Island rank as the number one spots for first time snorkelers, while the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Preserve is also an excellent snorkeling destination.
