Things to do / Travel Guide

Southern California's coast is known for its sunny beaches, muscled weightlifters, and gorgeous women, not to mention being regarded as the place to see and be seen by celebrities and people trying to break into the "biz". Palm trees and the Hollywood sign don't exactly scream winter sports. But what most people don't realize is that when the heat dissipates, those same people bundle up tight and head to the slopes for some powder right near Tinsel-town.

Skiing in and around Los Angeles

Mt Baldy is the closest snow-sports center to central Los Angeles' city limits. It offers alpine skiing and numerous backcountry trails to traverse.
Its smaller crowds mean more time to explore the three mountains complex with its areas on which skiers and snowboarders of all levels are free to play. It offers slopes with a range of difficulty levels, from easy gliding for beginners to steep, challenging runs for thrill seekers.

Family dining or a romantic dinner await patrons in Mt. Baldy's own Lodge which features a huge stone fireplace as its centerpiece and live music ranging from classical to cover bands. They also offer cabins for rent should you wish to stay the night.

Stop by Mountain High which offers high elevations but with no mountain driving necessary to reach it; a big plus for those not in a SUV or with 4-wheel drive. Three mountains rolled under one name, each offer a different feel and caters to a different type of rider. The younger, adrenaline seeking speedsters can usually be found at the "West Resort," the classic alpine downhill riders will prefer to carve up the "East Resort," and family atmosphere oriented folks will congregate over at the "North Resort."

Après ski is when Mountain High really heats up. Check out the local hotels, lodges, and cabins in Wrightwood for live music acts, intimate dining, or a cold beer in the lounge, to relax after a hard day in the snow.

Of course, swanky bars and hopping clubs, along with smooth jazz bars and every type in between, are to be found in the streets of Los Angeles and Orange County. Shed those layers and slip into something to make a statement in the night.

Hollywood may have the best singers, actors and actresses, comedians, and hopefuls trying to make it big, so why not join the crowd and blaze a few trails yourself while in the area? The Southern California coastline is calling you.
