Things to do / Travel Guide
Santa Barbara is a premier spot for paddling and all other related water and boating activities. Many locations close to the beach offer boating trips that include paddling lessons for people of all ages. Paddling, like kayaking, is generally regarded as one of the better ways to check out the southern California coastline as well as the best way to see the natural beauty and wildlife of the islands off the coast, including dolphins, seals, and sea lions. Many locations throughout Santa Barbara offer paddling and kayaking excursions of different lengths and different “styles” for people of various skill levels. Paddling boats can be rented for anywhere from an hour to a few days, and prices start at roughly $15 for a few hours to $40 for a full day.
Near San Diego, where the waters along the coast of La Jolla are clear, blue, and tranquil, paddlers can explore caves and can clearly view the area's coastline, which features a beautiful mountain backdrop. Keep in mind that wherever paddling can be done, you can generally also do some kayaking if you wish.
Sea kayaking is considered to be among the best ways to get up close and personal with some of southern California's beautiful scenery, and to see dolphins, seals, and sea lions in the wild. While every season is a good season for sea kayaking in southern California, sea kayaking is not recommended in bad weather. You can rent sea kayaking equipment at many places in the southern California coastal region.
Kayaking opportunities abound along the southern California coastline, and you can also kayak on many of the inland lakes. Some of the most popular areas in southern California to explore via kayak are in and around Ventura County as well as around Catalina Island, just off the coast of Los Angeles. These two spots in particular are generally recommended for experienced kayak enthusiasts.
