Things to do / Travel Guide

Los Angeles is a huge urban metropolis, with everything being spread out in a variety of different places. There are, however, a number of places where certain sections of town can be photographed.

At the Griffith Observatory you get an unobstructed view of the Hollywood sign as well as a panoramic view of the Hollywood area and downtown Los Angeles (the L.A. Basin). Provided the smog isn't too thick, sometimes it is possible to see all the way out to the Pacific Ocean from the Griffith Observatory. The Griffith Observatory has actually appeared in a number of feature films, such as “Rebel Without a Cause,” “Bowfinger,” “Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle,” “The Rocketeer,” “The Terminator,” and the James Bond movie “GoldenEye.” On television, the Griffith Observatory also appeared in the “MacGyver” series where it “played the part” of MacGyver's home.

Hollywood and areas such as the San Fernando Valley, Bel Air, Beverly Hills, and west L.A. can be viewed from a smattering of vistas dotted along Mulholland Drive, which runs like a string across the top of the Santa Monica Mountains.

The Getty Center, a multi-million dollar museum perched on top of a mountain looming over the Sepulveda Pass, also offers great views of Santa Monica, Brentwood, and the Pacific Ocean.
