Things to do / Travel Guide

With such a varied and mixed demographic, southern California dining features an extreme variety of choices in cost, food styles, and ambience. Chinese food, Thai food, Indian food, Japanese food, Mexican food; all types of cuisine are available and plentiful here.

Be all that as it may, southern California is also home to “California Cuisine.” California Cuisine generally refers to a combination of popular American dishes, some with a distinctively Italian, Mediterranean, or Pacific Rim twist. Also popular in equal, perhaps even unparalleled abundance, is pizza. Today, all over southern California, pizza remains probably the most popular culinary delight available.

On the flip side, there is also a huge market for health food stores and restaurants as well as seafood (in particular shrimp and lobster).

In southern California the breakfasts are big, usually including bacon, eggs, toast and coffee, and American-style pancakes. Lunch is a favorite southern California pastime, as in “power lunch” or “let's do lunch.” Usually served in restaurants from 11:30-2 in the afternoon, lunch can either be a very large and sumptuous meal, or something small and light, whatever your preference. Depending on the atmosphere (and sometimes general price) of a café or restaurant, dinner is usually a casual affair where an expanded menu is usually offered. Most bars feature a “happy hour” which usually lasts for at least two hours.

For those who like to totally gorge themselves, many dining establishments throughout southern California have buffets that offer diners every possible combination of culinary delights. Delis, particularly the Jerry's Famous Deli chain, remain largely popular with the southern California set.

In short, there truly is something for everyone in terms of food and dining in southern California.
