Things to do / Travel Guide
There are plenty of places in southern California that may appeal to the younger set.
Beyond the beaches, pools, and amusement parks, there are also mountains and a healthy local tendency towards active sport and running around. Los Angeles also has many museums and galleries dedicated to entertaining children. Some of these establishments offer storytelling workshops or finger painting programs. There is, for instance, the Bob Baker Marionette Theatre near Echo Park, which can dazzle children with dancing marionette puppets.
Speaking of puppets, in Santa Monica there is also the Puppet and Magic Center, where children can watch a “professional” puppet show or attend a child-friendly workshop where they can make their own puppets.
Kids who love railroads and trains can visit the Griffith Park Southern Railroad, a railway-inspired attraction in the southeastern corner of Griffith Park that has been featured in an episode of HBO's “Six Feet Under.” Kids and parents can ride a miniature train that makes a one-mile circle through the park, choo-choo-ing its way through a Western frontier town and a Native American tribal village along the way.
