Nature and Wildlife in San Diego, Laguna Beach, Los Angeles, Southern CA coast

Things to do / Travel Guide

Southern California is a large region and, as such, is home to a wide array of flora and fauna.

The coastal area around Santa Barbara is home to many pine trees and cypress trees. Inland, however, southern California is a very arid region where palm and oak trees can be found in relative abundance.

There is a variety of wildlife in southern California, especially water-based creatures. Off the coast, it is possible to see whales, dolphins, sea lions, seals, and otters flip-flopping around in the Pacific Ocean, especially right near the Channel Islands and Santa Barbara.
Gray whales, in particular, can sometimes be seen frolicking in the ocean from December-March as they travel down to the warmer waters of Mexico.

Southern California is also home to a large array of flight-bound creatures. Various species of birds and other winged creatures like pelicans, grebes, terns, gulls, cormorants, sandpipers, and, of course, the California condor can be seen in this region. The California condor is the most endangered animal in the Golden State and, in addition, it's perhaps the largest winged animal on earth, with wingspans sometimes measuring 10 feet across. Condors generally prefer areas close to the coastline where they can perch and watch the waters for fish to consume.

In San Diego, from December-February, whale watching is popular as gray whales pass through the area en route to and from the warm waters of coastal Mexico. Places that offer fishing trips usually also offer options for whale watching during the winter seasons as well.
