Things to do / Travel Guide

San Diego

To take a step back in time, visitors are encouraged to pay a visit to any one of the Spanish missions which are today open to the public. Entering a mission will help you get a sense of the Colonial area in southern California. Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, in Oceanside, near San Diego, is a working mission on the National Register of Historic Places that also houses a museum and visitors center.

For those wishing to capture a glimpse of the important role San Diego has played in the history of the United States Navy, check out the Embarcadero waterfront pathway in downtown, where visitors can explore the historic naval vessels now permanently docked at the piers.

Long Beach

In Long Beach, history and Cold War buffs can visit the Russian Foxtrot Submarine, code named “Scorpion.” Visitors are not only welcomed and invited to rummage through the Soviet-era vessel, but there is even a retired Russian submarine officer on hand to answer any questions, provided they don't chew away at Russian state secrets. To ensure an enhanced visit to the attraction, it is suggested that would-be visitors call ahead of time to make sure the former Russian submariner will be available, as he is not present every day.

Near the Scorpion in Long Beach is the Queen Mary. The Queen Mary is a luxuriously posh British cruise ship that features a hotel on board and is rumored to be haunted. Guided ghost tours are available dockside for those in the mood for a spook.

Los Angeles

A (more recent) historical site in southern California is Grauman's Chinese Theater (on Hollywood Boulevard), which has been screening the industry's top movies since the roaring 1920s and continues to show big budget Hollywood blockbuster premieres today.
