Things to do / Travel Guide
The coastal area of southern California starts in the north at Santa Barbara and stretches south through Ventura County and Malibu. It also encompasses the San Fernando Valley and the Los Angeles basin, Palos Verdes, Long Beach and Seal Beach, Orange County (including Santa Ana, Newport Beach, and Laguna Beach), Oceanside, Escondido, and La Jolla. The coastal region continues south towards San Diego and stretches all the way down to the California-Mexico border.
To drive the entire length of southern California's coastal region would take approximately 5½ hours. The coastal area is generally hilly, but some areas, such as the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, Garden Grove in Orange County, and downtown San Diego, are surprisingly flat or dotted with gentle rolling hills.
There are many islands off the coast of southern California. Near Santa Barbara are the Channel Islands, while just a short ferry ride away off the coast of Los Angeles, like a jewel in the Pacific, sits Catalina Island.
