Southern California Fishing Spots
Miles of seemingly endless coastline, coupled with plenty of inland lakes and rivers, make southern California a fantastic region for a fishing trip. Catches like barracuda, yellowtail, and bass from the deep sea can be reeled in from the waters off of the coast of southern California from April-October, while albacore tuna appears in abundance during the summer.
Five different kinds of trout (rainbow, cutthroat, golden, brown, and brook), along with some other species of fish can be found in the waters off the coast California, including blue fin, yellow fin, and skipjack tuna.
San Diego Fishing Spots
San Diego is considered one of the best cities in the country for fishing. The area lakes are well stocked and the Pacific Ocean is right there – accessible from the areas fishing piers and by boat. There are several popular piers in the San Diego area from Imperial Beach, close to the Mexican border to Embarcadero Pier in the city to Crystal Pier, north of San Diego.
Fishing boats leave from the southern California ports of Newport Beach, San Diego, and Long Beach to sail the open waters of the Pacific for deep sea fishing as well as sport fishing. A California state sport fishing license must be obtained for all participants over the age of 16. Licenses are available for periods of one day up to a year, and can be obtained at over 2,000 different sporting goods stores, boat companies, and bait and tackle shops in the region. For more information, you can contact the California Department of Fishing and Game in Sacramento.
LA Fishing Spots
Besides the obvious Pacific Ocean fishing options, the mountains, lakes and creeks of the Los Angeles area offer freshwater fishing as well. Located in the San Gabriel Mountains, near LA, the multiple forks of the San Gabriel River are a great place for rainbow trout. Make sure you have the proper permits.
