Things to do / Travel Guide
On the eastern edge of the San Fernando Valley, north of downtown Los Angeles, are the Descanso Gardens, located in La Canada Flintridge. Descanso Gardens is a 25-acre camellia forest that includes a Japanese tea house, lilac garden, bird sanctuary, and, on occasion, exhibitions of local art.
In Orange County, the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden in Claremont houses 70,000 native Californian plants and flowers for those inclined to enjoying horticulture. As a private, non-profit organization located in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden aims to conserve the unique variety of California flora and fauna for future generations.
The Arboretum of Los Angeles County in Arcadia, near Los Angeles, is another botanical wonder worth visiting. The Arboretum is probably more well-known for being the location where scenes from big-action Hollywood blockbusters, such as “Jurassic Park” and “Anaconda,” were filmed.
Also in the greater L.A. area, in Pasadena, are the Huntington Botanical Gardens. Occupying an area of nearly 150 acres, the Huntington Botanical Gardens are spliced up into several smaller gardens which include a desert garden, Japanese garden, subtropical garden, rose garden, lily ponds, an art gallery and much more. There is an admission fee to enter the Huntington Botanical Gardens, but, once inside, tours are free and docents that double as plant experts are available to answer all your questions.
