Our Tourist Attractions Expert Says:

Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday made Tombstone famous with their 1881 shoot-out at the O.K. Corral. Today, you can recapture the "Wild West" atmosphere of "the town too tough to die", in an environment fun for the whole family. Visit the Boot Hill Graveyard, where many victims of the lawlessness of the "Wild West" are buried, or the old Tombstone Courthouse where some unlucky scoundrels died of "natural causes" before justice was meted out by the court. And, of course, the star attraction is the gunfight re-enactments at the O.K. Corral itself. Expect to pay admission to several of the popular sights.

Many of the historic buildings are in the compact six block area formed by 3rd, 6th, Fremont and Toughnut streets. The buildings, many dating from the 1880's, represent one of the best preserved examples of that period's Western frontier architecture in the United States. Tombstone is about an hour southeast of Tucson and, while it's possible to spend the night, most people make this family excursion a day trip. If you prefer, however, you can stay overnight in any one of Tombstone's motels, B&B's or cabins and see for yourself if the saloons really are haunted.
