The Apache trail through the Superstition Mountains stretches through 40 miles of majestic scenery and volcanic rocks, dense forest and beautiful blue lakes. This scenic and well known trail is home to magnificent rock outcroppings and amazing geologic formations all along its 40 miles. The area's beauty is mostly due to millions of years of water carving a route through the area, and water remains a huge attraction, in an area known for its fishing and swimming opportunities.
The first part of the trail cuts a hairpin road through the Sonoran Desert and leads you along the Salt River, until you reach Theodore Roosevelt Lake. This rare paved section of the road passes through an abandoned ghost town, and brings you to Canyon Lake, where you can cast your rod and try for catfish and bass. Shortly thereafter you reach Skeleton Cave, site of one of the bloodiest battles during the Indian uprisings in 1872, during the Tonto Basin War.
Ample camping opportunities exist at this point, and you can spend time in the Lost Dutchman State Park, with camping and picnic opportunities, as well as smaller trails leading into the Superstition Wilderness. For the naturalist inside you, enjoy the spectacular wildflower blooms throughout the trail, including Mexican gold poppies, blue lupine, and purple owl clovers. Enjoy one of our country's last refuges of untouched pristine wilderness!
From Phoenix, AZ, head east on US-60, and make a left at the start of the Apache Trail, AZ-188. Please note, the parts of the trail can be dangerous for larger cars, and most RV companies to not allow their vehicles to be taken on the road.
