Our Sports Superfan Says:
Have a fun-filled day at the races at historic Turf Paradise Track, located in north central Phoenix, Arizona. Nestled into lushly landscaped grounds, and surrounded by beautiful mountain ranges, you'll be thrilled by the heart-pounding excitement of live Thoroughbred racing on Turf Paradise's one mile dirt oval, and think you truly are in paradise! Turf Paradise's season runs from October through May, with live racing conducted five days a week, generally Friday through Tuesday. Simulcasting from race tracks around the country is available on all race days. The track's main event is the Turf Paradise Derby stakes, which is held annually in February. The race is a big draw for contenders eyeing a spot in the Kentucky Derby.
Turf Paradise, once desert like most of the Phoenix area, is located in what is now a very rapidly growing area. In 1954, a Phoenix businessman, Walter Cluer, purchased 1,400 acres of barren desert. Cluer was a horse owner, and dreamed of building a first class race track. On January 7, 1956, Turf Paradise opened its doors, and the locals responded by filling every seat. Since that time, the track has changed ownership, with each owner upgrading the venue and adding new features. Each season Turf Paradise offers "Alternative Race Day." This is always quite an event, with camels, ostriches, pigs, and more racing at the track. The event is family oriented, with pony rides, inflatables, and face painting available for the kids.
Turf Paradise offers free outdoor seating in the grandstand on two inside and two outside levels. One outside level is trackside, while the other is an upper balcony area. It is also free in the grassy picnic area adjacent to the Grandstand, where there are shaded tables, and a railbird's view of the races. Another of the Clubhouse's advantages is that when it gets hot in Arizona it is best to head to the indoor venues.
If you are coming with a group, consider calling ahead and booking a tour. You will be able to see the stables and the unique horse training and therapy pool, and learn about the workings of Turf Paradise and how racing is regulated.
Turf Paradise is located on the corner of Bell Road and 19th Avenue, just fourteen miles northwest of downtown Phoenix. It is just off I-17 and general parking here is free. Turf Paradise's entrances now greet fans with stunning 90 foot marquees at both entrances.
