Kartchner Caverns was discovered in 1974 by two young cavers who were exploring the limestone hills at the base of Whetstone Mountains, but it became a State Park only in 1988. Today, visitors are invited to tour the "living cave," where formations are still growing, and to explore the speleothems, which decorate the cave. Unusual formations here include shields, totems, helictites, and rimstone dams, to name a few, as well as the world's most extensive formation of brushite moonmilk, or the Big Room. In addition to exploring the caves, park-goers are welcome to enjoy hiking the many trails and visiting the massive discovery center which holds world-class exhibits, as well as the on-site campgrounds.
