Our Museum Expert Says:

The Heard Museum is a Mecca of Native American art, and a fascinating way to spend the day. With over 35,000 pieces symbolizing southwestern native heritage, this museum is a precious cultural landmark.

Founded in 1929 to house the personal art collection of the Heard family, much of the archaeological material at the Museum originates from the La Ciudad Indian ruin. Today, the Heard Museum has over 130,000 square feet of gallery, classroom and performance space. It features exhibits such as a full Navajo hogan, the Mareen Allen Nichols Collection with its 260 pieces of contemporary jewelry, and an exhibit on the 19th century boarding school experiences of Native Americans. Children will love the Goldwater Collection of historic Hopi kachina dolls. If you come in November, don't miss the annual Spanish Market with its strolling mariachis and artwork by Hispanic artists from Arizona and New Mexico - fun for the whole family. The newly renovated café offers classic signature Southwest-influenced menu items, as well as fresh soups, salads, and artisan bread sandwiches.

The Heard Museum is located at 2301 N. Central Avenue (Central & Encanto) in Phoenix, and has convenient alternate access via 3rd Street & Monte Vista during the light rail construction. Be sure not to miss this one-of-a-kind celebration of native American art!

From Heard Museum - Phoenix, Arizona:

The Heard Museum developed from the passion that pioneer settlers Dwight B. and Maie Bartlett Heard felt for the Southwest, its inhabitants and its history. The Heard's dream of sharing the beauty of their private collection with the public was realized in 1929 when the Heard Museum first opened its doors.
