If you have a thirst for Arizona history, check out the Tucson Main Museum, an affiliate of the Arizona Historical Society. The Arizona Historical Society is Arizona's oldest cultural organization, and the Tucson Main Museum is the region's oldest museum, a treasure-trove of artifacts and exhibits. In addition to providing the usual case-gazing opportunities available at most history museums, the Tucson Main Museum allows visitors to step back in time in engaging and well-executed exhibits. You can learn about the meeting of Western and native medicines in the 19th century, admire Victorian-style sitting rooms and explore a full-scale reproduction of an underground mine tunnel. The Tucson Main Museum has something for everyone.
Founded by the territorial legislature on November 7, 1864, the Arizona Historical Society was entrusted with the mission of preserving Arizona history for the present and future. The Tucson Main Museum is one of four Arizona Historical Society Museums located in Tucson. The others are the Fort Lowell Museum, the Downtown Museum and the Sosa-Carrillo-Fremont House. The rest of the Arizona Historical Society Museums are the Pioneer Museum in Flagstaff ( located in the historic Coconino country Hospital for the Indigent), the Sanguinetti House Museum and Garden in Yuma, an Italian-style oasis in the desert, and the Museum at Papago Park in Tempe, where guests can learn about the rich heritages of this diverse region. The varied foci and settings of the exhibits offered by the various Arizona Historical Society Museums allows visitors to visit more than one affiliate museum without feeling too much déjà vu. Additionally, each of the museums offers family-friendly programs and festivals, often free of charge.
