Things to do / Travel Guide
Southern Arizona is a fun place to do some serious shopping, whether you're looking for interesting shopping centers, Western souvenirs, or Native American crafts.
Shopping around Phoenix and Scottsdale
Unless you get lonesome for a plain old mall, skip Phoenix and head for nearby Scottsdale. “The West's Most Western Town” is a fun place to take the family to pick up some souvenirs. Old Town is packed with shops selling Western clothing, Western art, and Native American crafts. The Borgata offers a totally different shopping experience. Modeled after the Italian town of San Gimignaro, the Borgata's super-elegant shops are reached by passing through courtyards, medieval towers, and cobblestone paths.
The Gila River Arts and Crafts Center, located about 30 miles southeast of Phoenix includes a museum and a gift shop, where you'll be able to purchase a variety of crafts made by both local and other Native American tribes, including: pottery from the Maricopa Tribe, baskets from the Tohono O'odham Tribe, Hopi dolls and Navajo rugs. Also on display are jewelry and paintings from the various tribes. To get there from Phoenix, take I-10 Exit 175. Then go west half a mile on Casa Blanca Road.
Shopping around Tucson
For unusual craft and antique shops, go to Tucson's Fourth Avenue, between Fourth and Seventh Streets. Another place to browse is Old Town Artisans, on the corner of Meyer Avenue and Telles Street, near the Tucson Museum of Art. Craftspeople display their pottery, clothing, jewelry, woodcarvings, and other artistic jewels at the site.
Tubac
With more than 80 shops and studios, Tubac deserves its reputation as one of southern Arizona's best spots for shopping. At this artist's colony, which is located 45 miles south of Tucson, you'll find hand-crafted jewelry, pottery, sculpture, paintings, clothing, and more.
