Restaurants and Food in Phoenix, Tucson, Scottsdale, Arizona

Things to do / Travel Guide

American, Western, and Mexican food are the kings of cuisine in southern Arizona. What's the difference between American and Western? At the first type of restaurant, you might see quiche or a salad on the menu, in addition to the steak and ribs. But at any self-respecting Western restaurant, your entrée choices are cowboy food: steak and ribs, with maybe some chicken. And this is one region where you can still get a delicious steak dinner for under $20 per person. Be sure to check the dress code before you go. At more upscale establishments, blue jeans are not appreciated. On the other hand, if you show up at a traditional Western restaurant wearing a tie, the proprietor just might snip it off before you're allowed to come inside.

Heritage Square, located in central Phoenix, is one spot where you'll be able to see some older buildings, such as the Victorian-style Rosson House. Other 19th century homes on Heritage Square now house museums or restaurants.

Ethnic food, including cuisines from the Middle East and Far East, can be found in the larger cities, such as Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Tucson. There are also a few vegetarian restaurants in each of these cities, and branches of the popular Wild Oats Natural Marketplace can be found in them, as well. Because the region is part of the Southwest, Mexican food can also be found just about everywhere.
