Things to do / Travel Guide
Both Phoenix and Tucson are bases for a wide variety of tour operators, whose different types of organized tours will allow you to enjoy the scenic beauty of southern Arizona.
Walking Tours
The walking tour of historic Tucson and the nature museums, such as the Desert Botanical Garden east of Phoenix, can be done on your own. Maps are also available for the many well-kept hiking trails that meander through the region's national parks and monuments.
If you'd like a guided walking tour through the rugged landscape beyond the metropolitan areas, there are several tour operators that will take you on customized hiking tours. Moseying up and down those winding trails on horseback is another popular way to see the region.
Hot Air Balloon Tours
To get a bird's-eye view of the magnificent southern Arizona desert scenery, try a ride in a hot air balloon. Some companies provide awe-inspiring sunrise and sunset flights, but whatever hour you choose to fly, you'll be treated to an incredible view of the Sonoran Desert, including its rich plant and animal life.
Bus Tours
If you prefer to travel by coach, there are many options from both Phoenix and Tucson. Half and full day tours are available and will shuttle you to all of the big sights in the region including Tombstone, Bisbee, Mission San Xavier del Bac, Old Tucson Studios, and more.
Hummer Tours
Hummer tours will take you to places that a tamer vehicle can't go, and this is a very popular way for the entire family to have a great adventure without the younger members getting overly tired.
Rock Climbing Tours
If you want a more hands-on experience when you go exploring the Sonoran Desert, there are tour companies that will literally teach you the ropes of rock-climbing and canyoneering.
