Getting Around Phoenix, Tucson, Scottsdale, Tombstone, Arizona

Things to do / Travel Guide

Tucson is serviced by a local bus system, while Phoenix has both a local bus system and a light rail system that will transport you to all major points in the city, as well as to nearby Mesa, Tempe, Scottsdale, North Mountain, Glendale, Chandler, Avondale, and Deer Valley.

Both Phoenix and Tucson are laid out on a grid system and are fairly easy to navigate around on your own. The public bus service doesn't reach all the national parks and monuments outside the metropolitan areas that you might want to see. Therefore, unless you'll be joining an organized tour, you'll need to drive.

I-10 is the main artery of the region, which connects Phoenix to Tuscon and points east. I-19 connects south from Tucson to the U.S.-Mexican border.

Because Phoenix's Sky Harbor Airport (PHX) is centrally located in the middle of the city it is very easy to connect to nearby Mesa, Tempe, and Scottsdale via taxi or bus. It is easy to either drive or take a bus to the airport in Tucson which is just 10 miles from downtown. It is possible to fly between Phoenix and Tucson (about 45 minutes) but it is much more affordable to drive (two hours).
