Things to do / Travel Guide
If you can't tell the difference between a saguaro cactus and a prickly pear, head for one of the region's excellent botanical gardens, where you'll learn about southern Arizona's astonishingly varied plant life.
East of Phoenix is Papago Park, home of the Desert Botanical Garden, which contains one of the world's largest and most diverse collection of desert plants. Stroll down the one-third mile Desert Discovery Trail and you'll pass thousands of plants, including more than half the cactus, century plants, and aloe species in the world. Signs and trail guides will identify what you're looking at.
Further south is the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, one of the most popular attractions in Tucson. The museum's botanical garden has more than 1,200 different kinds of plants and almost two miles of scenic desert paths. In addition to the botanical garden, the museum has a world-renowned zoo and natural history museum, all of which are open daily.
