The Lookout Mountain Incline Railway is an incredibly steep railways located on the side of Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Upon departure, you'll climb up from St. Elmo's station at the base, all the way up to Point Park, at the summit of Lookout Mountain. From there you'll be able to look down on Chattanooga and the Tennessee River. On a clear day, you'll be able to observe the Great Smokey Mountains – over one hundred miles away!
The climb up the side of Lookout Mountain reaches an incline of 72.7% in some places, making this railroad the steepest passenger train in the world, even since its construction in 1895. This achievement warranted the site to be declared both a National Historic Site as well as a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark. The train itself is comfortable and makes the ride enjoyable, with observation windows to enjoy the majestic views. Once you're on top of Lookout Mountain, make sure you check out all of the Civil War sites of interest, like the battleground of the romanticized Battle Above the Clouds.
The train costs about $15 for adults and $5 for kids and runs between 8:30am to 9:30pm in the summer, 9:00am to 6:00pm in the spring and fall, and 10:00am to 6:00pm in the winter.
