With the highest snowmaking capacity per acre in the Southeast, Winterplace has no shortage of snow to keep visitors occupied and happy. Nestled in the Allegheny Mountains is the place where winter banks down and singles or groups alike flock to have a great day in the snow aptly named Winterplace. Snowboarders have a dedicated terrain park with plenty of features guaranteed to sharpen their edges and skiers have a selection of over 28 trails to warm the wax up and shave it off in the 90+ acres of pure winter fun.
Seasonally open from December to March, riders can be on the slopes by 8am and close it down with nightskiing until 10 pm making Winterplace accessible to all. Large groups of school, scouts and church youth groups are frequent visitors to Winterplace, so expect some longer lift lines during the nighttime skiing and even more so on weekends as this resort is a favorite among families and younger kids. Winterplace is also the home of West Virginia's largest snowtubing park with 16 lanes of sliding fun open from 9am to 10pm everyday.
Dropping in from the 3,600 foot summit, riders of all skill levels will have their choice of interesting terrain. Nine chairlifts shuttle riders top to bottom, including up to the longest trail, which runs a considerable mile and quarter long for intermediate level riders.
Tabletops, hips, rails, and gap jumps are just some of the features that Winterplace has installed for snowboarders to rock out on. With their own dedicated chairlift and halfpipe, snowboarders will have plenty to keep them busy, day or night, on the slopes.
If you're looking to learn for the first time, or brush up on skills long forgotten, check out Winterplace's ski school, which offers lessons from 4 years of age in their Skiwee program, right up to the golden ages, with friendly instructors professionally certified to help you with any questions or problems you may have. Private, semi-private, group, and beginner-only lesson packages are available. Little ones from the ages of 6 months to 4 years old will have caring skibunnies to look after them in the Frosties Kinder Kare center, while Mom and Dad are out enjoying the fresh air.
Rentals at Winterplace require a deposit, but give riders access to an array of top brand equipment from firms such as Rossingnol and K2, available in either standard or Demo pairs. Snowblades and snowboards with step and strap-in bindings are also available.
There is free night skiing included with the purchase of an all day ticket, and Winterplace also offers add-on snowtubing or group lesson options. This can not only save a significant amount of money, but can also add an extra dimension to a day on the slopes. Other time slots sold for lift passes are half day, twilight, night and multi-day ticket options with separate adult and junior (6-12 years old) rates. Children under the age of 5 ski or ride free when accompanied by a paying adult.
When the sun sets, and the lights turn off, stop into the Snowdrift Lounge or the Mountainhouse in order to catch the live acoustic bands playing there nightly, or try out your own singing with karaoke at Mountain Mama's, all located on site. Hungry stomachs will find relief at either of the two cafeterias, with the Mexican and Italian fusion at Mickey's Mountain Café, or from the bar fare at the two lounges, located at the base and mid-mountain for convenience.
Winterplace offers lodging onsite with a selection of over 6,000 beds located in cabins, cottages, and their resort, Glade Springs, itself. Guests staying at the resort receive 1 free lift pass per room, per night, and also have access to the free shuttle that ferries between the front of the resort and the base of the mountain all day long. Glade Springs has a café, spa, bar and grill restaurant, indoor tennis and basketball courts, and a fitness center to whittle the time away, as the snow and temperature drops outside of the windows.
The town of Princeton, West Virginia, a short 15-20 minute drive away, offers a plethora of lodging, dining, and activities to appease anyone in your traveling party. There are national franchised inns, hotels, and motels available, as well as privately owned bed and breakfasts, condos, and townhouses. With most of the lodging located within walking distance to every type of food you could imagine and desire – steaks, seafood, pasta, and BBQ to name a few, Princeton is a great place from which to base your ski vacation. Throw in the nearby state parks, spas, and antique shopping, as well as the thriving nightlife in pubs, taverns, and lounges, and visitors will be hard pressed to think of why they should consider going anywhere else.
Dress warm, arrive early, and make the first tracks at Winterplace this season. With a name that fits exactly what you're looking for and snow for days, where else would you go?
