Our Ski Specialist Says:

Twice named the "Best Ski Resort" by the Washington Post, Wintergreen Ski Resort lives up to that designation, boasting the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains as their home, and twenty-six trails on their terrain, all just one and half hours from Richmond, Virgina, making Wintergreen a great destination for day trips during the winter months.

Open from 9am to 10 pm Sunday through Thursday, and staying open till 11pm Friday and Saturday, Wintergreen has a season stretching from mid-December to mid-March that leaves visitors hungry and coming back for more for more each season. The twenty-six trails include eleven black diamond, and three hair-raising double black diamond, trails, as well as ample beginner and intermediate runs. These are all serviced by five lifts, one of which is a high speed 6 person chairlift, that speed riders to the top in under 8 minutes!

Snowboarders can choose from a standard or progression park, each accessed by a separate triple chairlift. Riders will find rainbow rails, battleships, funboxes, tabletops, and spines to grind a little metal on. Wintergreen takes pride in constantly reshaping their parks, and host annual competitions open to local and visitor riders alike.

Lessons are given, starting from age 6, for every level from beginner to advanced. There are group and private lesson options, and with Wintergreen's "Guaranteed to Learn" program, students benefit by being able to take the lessons for free if they're still having trouble making it down the hill once the course is ended. Once they graduate their lessons, there are discounts available on future lift passes and rentals. Little ones aged 2 ½ to 12 years old have their own "Treehouse" to play in all day, however this fills up fast, so make sure reservations are made at least 24 hours in advance. A Women's Club, and a snowboarding course for 30+ year old year old beginners are offered daily, as are adaptive ski lessons for those who are physically or cognitively challenged. All these work towards making Wintergreen very accessible, regardless of age or status.

Lift passes are sold as midweek and weekend day tickets with half day, night, and holiday hours. There is a military discount for those with proper ID, as well as overnight packages available to anyone if given prior 24 hour notice. Check out "The Plunge" and "The Slide" tubing parks in 1 or 2 hour block of time, and come sliding down one of the parks' ten lanes for 900 feet of laughs, smiles, and red cheeks from the cold.

Wintergreen has spent over $4 million dollars in expansion as part of their commitment to their guests enjoyment. Visit the spa and fitness center on site, as well as the two bars and four restaurants that serve up steaks, southern flair dishes, BBQ, fish, tacos, coffee, and drink specials daily to give the perfect ending to the day.

Guests not staying to take advantage of the over 300 onsite options, ranging from studios to seven bedroom houses, can take the short drive into Richmond, Virgina (1 ½ hours) or Washington, DC (3 hours) for a wider range of lodging options. These range from national chain hotels and motels, to privately owned condos, townhouses, and suites. Big cities also equal more nightlife options, with rowdy bars and swanky lounges, and eateries from intimate fine dining to casual burger and pizza joints.

Wintergreen resort is a breath of fresh air that won't disappoint anyone, from the youngest to the youngest at heart, in the bunch. It's not hard to see what the Washington Post voiced; Wintergreen is, and should be, at the top of everyone's itinerary this winter.
