Ski Beech is the highest ski area in Eastern North America at 5500 feet above sea level. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Ski Beech's 5,560 foot summit leaves no one disappointed at day's end. As the second largest ski resort in North Carolina, Ski Beech challenges riders with its fifteen slopes covered with a mixture of Mother Nature's own snow and manmade powder. Many of the advanced trails are left to bump over for moguls, providing a steep thrill for adrenaline seekers, while beginners have their own area especially for them.
Ten lifts service the three beginner, seven intermediate, and four advanced slopes, including both the freestyle terrain areas and the snowboarders' terrain park. All trails eventually filter into the beginner area so watch out for slow moving patrons and smaller children. It's also a convenient meeting place if you come with a group since no one gets lost. Open seven days a week from 8:30am to 10pm, and with a season stretching from mid-November to mid-March, Ski Beech is a perfect place for a getaway.
Snowboarders have a freestyle terrain park with a halfpipe that is groomed nightly, and kickers abound. Sometimes the pipe can be shallow so always look before you leap! Demo equipment for snowboards and skis can be rented at Ski Beech, and all the snowboards are step in boot/binding systems. Those with their own equipment must remember to have a leash on when snowboarding.
Lessons are given for all levels, and adaptive riders with physical, visual, or mental disabilities have their own learning center with professionally certified staff trained specially to deal with those isues. Children can be enrolled in the structured all day program at Ski Beech, which includes their rental equipment and lunch.
There are discounts galore available at Ski Beech. Ladies ski or ride for free on Mondays, and men on Thursdays. Bargain nights, Military discounts, and 2 for 1 tickets make Ski Beech the affordable choice for any winter vacation. Children under 6 years of age, and seniors over 70, ride free.
Be aware that Ski Beech has the tendency to blow snow day and night, so pack warm clothing, and wear goggles, to protect you from the cold environment. The weekends tend to attract longer lines, especially on Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, so plan around that holiday, if possible.
Ski Beech's Alpine Village offers visitors many shops and restaurants to fill the nighttime hours once the day on the slopes has ended. Check out the 7,000 square foot outdoor skating rink, and the tubing park with its 3, 12 foot wide flumes! The Beech Tree Bar and Grill, located on site, offers live music and a game room. Just twenty-four miles away is Boone, which has over 650 options for lodging, restaurants, and nightlife. Featuring a theater, mall, bar and grills, fine dining, delis, pubs, bars, and clubs, Boone is the place to be for the after hours scene once the slopes close for the night at Ski Beech.
Make it a point to stop here on your next vacation, and don't be disappointed if you misunderstood the name. Even without the beach, you're sure to enjoy the pure snow and great times at Ski Beech.
