Our Ski Specialist Says:

Snowboarders will fall in love with Massanutten's snowboard terrain parks and facilities. Located in McGaheysville, Virgina, in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Massanutten is the snowboarding haven winter sports lovers dream about. Skiers are also not neglected of course, but considering how snowboard centric Massanutten is, one must fairly admit that skiers takes a backseat here.

Peaking at 2,925 feet, and boasting a 1,110 foot vertical drop, Massanutten is a "whole lot of something," featuring three beginner, five intermediate, and three advanced trails with Dixie flavored names such as "Southern Comfort", "Rebel Yell" and "Diamond Jim". 70 acres of skiable terrain are cut gracefully out of the mountain. There is usually little natural snow, and the trails are shorter than most would like, but consistent coverage from the snow guns, and nice pitch, make Massanutten worth a visit.

As previously mentioned, snowboarders come to Massanutten for the ever changing variety and challenge of its snowboarding terrain. The two terrain parks actually have their own separate staff to groom and hand shape the ever changing layout daily. Every day the new layout is posted in the rental shop for all to see, so they can get up to speed before getting up some speed. However, be aware that rental snowboards are not available in the park, so you'll need to bring your own equipment to take advantage of this unique site. The terrain park is serviced by its own J bar lift, and features both large and small jumps, jibs, rails, and boxes. Instructors certified by the American Association of Snowboard Instructors are on hand to give advice or teach lessons in both classic and freestyle boarding techniques.

Ski lessons are given by Professional Ski Instructors of America instructors on all levels from the beginners program called "Pathways," to advanced beginner and intermediate levels. Massanutten also offers an adaptive ski program for those with handicaps, as well as "Slope Sliders," their children's program, which requires reservations at least 48 hours in advance.

Visitors will revel in the "Peaked Mountain Express Tube" snow tubing park where they can careen down 900 foot long chutes. There is also an indoor water park, offering you a radical change of pace as you go from winter sports to splashing around in a bathing suit in the indoor pool, with the sounds of children's laughter and screams of delight echoing off the walls. There is an arcade on the 3rd floor which provides hours of entertainment for both the young and young at heart.

Massanutten's cafeteria is open from 8:30am to 10pm daily, serving up the standard hamburgers, hotdogs, and sandwich selections, as well as hot and cold beverages. The Encounters lounge offers a bar with table service and light fares, as well as nightly entertainment and live music. On the weekends and specialty band nights, patrons must be over 21 years of age. Hotels and condos can also be found onsite, equipped with kitchens, fireplaces, decks, and whirlpool tubs to make your stay comfortable and pleasant, without needing to stray far from the slopes.

Visitors can also decide to head into nearby Harrisonburg, the home of James Madison University. There they'll find shopping, restaurants of all kinds from Italian to Asian and beyond, a mall, grocery store, movie theater, Walmart, Kmart, and cheaper lodging options than Masanutten offers onsite.

So at just a short 4 hour drive from Philadelphia, or an even shorter 2 hour drive from Washington, DC or Roanoke, West Virginia and the Dulles International Airport, Massanutten is the smart choice for an all-inclusive escape to the slopes this winter.
