Our Nature Nut Says:

One of the oldest rivers in North America, the New River Gorge National River offers spectacular whitewater rafting and paddling, and canoeing trips for almost all levels of experience. More than 1,400 rock routes up the park's sandstone cliffs are established throughout the park, mainly for advanced climbers. There are great hikes for those on foot or mountain bikes, leading visitors past amazing river views, mine openings, cascading waterfalls, and even an old homestead site. There are several great trails popular with fishermen and campers. For fabulous foliage, plan to visit in the fall, especially if you're a photography enthusiast.
The park has an interesting cultural history as well. Kaymoor, an old mining community rests within the park as does Thurmond, which was once an important railroad town. The actual Thurmond Depot has been restored and currently functions as a park visitor center.
