Things to do / Travel Guide
Known as "The Mon," the Monongahela National Forest in tha Appalachian Mountains, contains some of the wildest and most beautiful forestlands in the eastern United States. From black cherry trees to black bears, Monongahela National Forest is brimming with diversity in nature and recreational activity and is an ideal retreat to escape the crowds.
Many of the country roads in the Monongahela National Forest are gravel, encouraging slow driving past restaurants, motels and shops found in the small communities sprinkled throughout the forest. The Allegheny Front of the Appalachian Mountains is filled with northern hardwoods such as cherry and maple, mixed with oak and yellow poplar. The drier eastern side contains oak, cedar, and even cactus. Since Monongahela National Forest is home to the headwaters of five major river systems including Cranberry River, the Greenbrier River below Durbin, and Dry Fork, visitors have plenty of opportunities to frolic in the water, go canoeing, fish for trout in the rivers and streams and enjoy whitewater rafting in the spring. Monongahela National Forest also offers hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding on a dozen mixed-use trails. But wait there's more! Bird watching, rock climbing, cross-country skiing, caving and camping are also available at this magnificent forest. History buffs will be pleased to know that Monongahela National Forest is particularly rich in Civil War historical sites.
