Blackwater Falls State Park itself is named for the dark-colored water, stained by fallen needles from hemlock and spruce trees, which fill the Blackwater River. As one of the most photographed sites in the state, Blackwater has exceptional vistas and natural beauty that make it a center for outdoor recreation. The Falls are amazing to gaze upon while hiking some of the 20 miles of trails here, and the river is frequently stocked with trout for those interested in trying their hand at fishing. Winter brings great cross-country skiing as well as sledding, where a rope tow drags sledders to the top of the quarter-mile-long hill. With all of this plus adorable cabins and campgrounds, this park is sure to please!

Blackwater Falls State Park is named for the falls of the Blackwater River whose amber-colored waters plunge five stories then twist and tumble through an eight-mile long gorge. The "black" water is a result of tannic acid from fallen hemlock and red spruce needles. The falls are one of the most photographed sites in West Virginia.
