Discover unusual rock formations, endless trails and rich history! A visit to Cumberland Gap National Historical Park's 20,000 acres brings you to the first great gateway to the American west!
Named for the natural break in the Appalachians where wildlife and settlers passed through the mountains as they headed westbound, today, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park is filled with awesome mountain vistas and is a great place to explore with over 70 miles of trails, from easy 1/4 mile hikes to the 21 mile Ridge Trail, as well as remote backcountry trails and camping. Nature lovers will get a kick out of the abundant wildlife including deer, beaver, fox, bobcat, bear, and over 150 species of birds! And don't miss the Pinnacle Overlook, one of the most frequently visited areas in the park, at about 2,440 feet above sea level or Hensley Settlement, a restored log cabin community you must hike to get to, located on Brush Mountain. Many other historic sites can be seen in the park including Civil War fortifications, and the ruins of an old iron furnace. The park visitor center houses a museum with interactive exhibits and an auditorium where informative high definition films are shown as well as Cumberland Crafts, which showcases handmade crafts from the region.
Visitors traveling on Interstate 75 in Kentucky should exit on Highway 25E at Corbin. Cumberland Gap is located 50 miles south of Corbin on 25E. Get ready to lace up your boots, and have an amazing outdoor experience!
