Visit a Civil War plantation and learn the story of Shenandoah Valley's history through the War and beyond!
Cedar Creek & Belle Grove National Historical Park preserves key sites and the rich cultural heritage of the Shenandoah Valley, including sites such as the Belle Grove Stone Mansion, known as one of the finest homes in the Valley. Belle Grove was built in 1794 by Major Isaac Hite, whose wife was the sister of President James Madison. Thomas Jefferson was actively involved in the mansion's design, which included columns and Palladian-style front windows. Visitors to Cedar Creek & Belle Grove National Historical Park can see period antique furnishings during guided 45 minute tours of the mansion, and enjoy activities at partner sites such as the annual Battle of Cedar Creek Reenactment in mid-October. There's also camping, tours, and special events, so be sure to check the schedule (and the weather!).
To get to the Cedar Creek & Belle Grove National Historical Park from the north, take I-81 to exit 302 and then head south on U.S. 11. Enjoy learning about Valley life during the Civil War—and make sure you take in the beautiful scenery!
