Explore the historic village where the Confederate Army surrendered, effectively ending the Civil War! Appomattox Court House is a journey back in time and a must for any Civil War buff! The National Historic Park is comprised of about 20 original historic structures along with several reconstructed buildings on approximately 1700 acres in rural southern Virginia. Visitors can explore the likes of Clover Hill Tavern, Meeks' Store, the Woodson Law Office, the reconstructed courthouse, the jail, and Kelly House on their walk through the restored road through Appomattox village.
The reconstructed McLean house, furnished with mid-19th century furnishings and a combination of original and reproduced items, offers on site interpretation by park rangers on a daily basis, and tours are available seasonally as well. Outbuildings are also open to visitors and include slave quarters, exterior kitchen, and an outhouse—a great window into life in Civil War Virginia. Enjoy Living History programs offered daily during the summer and on weekends in the spring and fall. Park exhibits include many original artifacts associated with the events surrounding the surrender of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, and include General Lee's pencil—once used to make corrections in the surrender terms to documents and military artifacts. The Park also has a 70 seat theater where two different 15 minute slide programs are shown on an hourly schedule. Choose from the "Documentary" program covering the campaign, and "Soldiers Diaries" which consists of excerpts from diaries of soldiers who were present at the site in 1865.
Be sure to set aside two hours to explore the entire Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, located in south central Virginia approximately 95 miles west of Richmond. The main Visitor Parking Area is located on VA Route 24, two miles from Appomattox, VA. The closest airport is in Lynchburg, VA, 25 miles west of the Park. Fees vary depending on time and season. Become a part of the historic moment where the North and South reconciled and the United States again became a nation! Have fun!
