Our History Buff Says:

Honor Andrew Johnson, the 17th President of the United States, who following President Lincoln's assassination, attempted to unify a nation torn by civil war.

Assuming the presidency on the heels of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson had a tough act to follow, but is much revered as the man who was able to reunify a country after the bloody Civil War. Andrew Johnson National Historic Site was established to honor the 17th President of the United States. The site includes two of his homes, his tailor shop, and his gravesite within Andrew Johnson National Cemetery as well as the interments of his wife, Eliza McCardle Johnson, and son Brigadier General Robert Johnson. Visitors can enjoy a tour of the historic site at the Visitor Center, where there is a small museum and bookshop as well as an introductory film shown about the life and presidency of Johnson. Two of his homes are located on site; a tour of the Early Home features exhibits about his young life, and the Homestead is where Johnson and his family lived for 24 years after he held office. Guided tours of this home are available daily and limited to 12 people per tour.

To get here from I-81S take exit 36 to Route 172 South to Greeneville. Follow the signs to the Visitor Center. Spend a few hours walking the grouds, seeing his homes, and getting to know the man who pulled our country back together.
