Aside from the standard collection of large malls and outlet malls, For shopping in the southern Appalachian Mountains, you've got three major options: Farmers markets or antique shops all throughout the region, or shopping among the boutiques in Asheville, North Carolina.
Farmers Markets in the Southern Appalachian Mountains
Many communities in the region offer farmers markets. There are a lot of small farms dotting the countryside, and one central way the sell their produce is through these markets. They sell many kinds of fruits and vegetables, and more often than not other things like meats, eggs, salsas and chutneys, and even some antiques. As a rule these markets aren't open in the cold months.
Antiquing in the Southern Appalachian Mountains
Antique shops can be found outside the cities, not quite in the middle of nowhere, but on roads that get some traffic passing through. Certainly, however, you can find antique stores in the region's more major cities - Roanoke, Asheville, and Knoxville.
The two main types of antiques you can find in the region are articles and furniture in the Victorian style, and those in the rustic mountain style.
Shopping in Asheville
Asheville is the region's center for shopping of all kinds: You'll find antiques, art and craft boutiques, and clothing and jewelry stores. The following areas can serve your needs:
- Downtown Asheville is filled with antique stores and art boutiques. Along Battery Park is Grove Arcade Public Market, which contains 50 locally-owned stores, both inside and outside. Buy food, candy, jewelry, carpets, and more. Opposite Grove Arcade is Not Your Average Antiques, which sells a wide variety of more 20th-century artifacts, like record players and records, children's toys and trinkets, and other bric-a-brac.
- Biltmore Village is located just outside the Estate of the same name. The buildings are classic, from the 19th century, and along with restaurants and cafés, there's plenty of shopping. There are more than a dozen antique shops, and over 30 boutique stores. You can find vintage and antique furniture, both American and European in the antique stores; the boutique stores feature clothing and art from small artisans all over America.
- The main streets of the surrounding towns of Brevard, Black Mountain, Hendersonville, and Waynesville, are all picturesque. You can find plenty of stores selling the old and the new.
