Ahoy there, sailor! The USS Alabama was a "South Dakota" class battleship on active duty from 1942 to 1947, and reserve duty until 1962. The ship was one of the few ships to serve in the Second World War without suffering a single casualty, earning her the nickname "Lucky A." The ship fought in both the Battle of the Atlantic and the Battle of the Pacific, and also fought in the Mediterranean. After being decommissioned in 1947, schoolchildren in Alabama raised nearly $100,000 in small change to contribute to the cost of converting her into a museum ship. She's berthed now in Mobile, Alabama, and open for tours!
Onboard the ship, you'll find that the decks, turrets, mess, berth compartments, bridge, wardroom and captain's cabin of the USS Alabama are all available for tours – enjoy nearly unlimited access to one of World War Two's most heroic of ships. There is no guided tour, though there is a self explanatory self-guided tour of the ship that takes about two hours. The museum is open seven days a week from 8 am until 4 pm (until 6 pm from April-September). Cost is only about $10 for adults, about $5 for children 6-12, and kids under 6 for free!
From I-10 coming from New Orleans, take exit 27 after entering Alabama, onto US-90/US-98 (Battleship Parkway). Keep right at the fork to continue toward AL-16/AL-42. Sail on!
