Our Tourist Attractions Expert Says:

Time hasn't changed at the Rosalie House, where tourists can catch a glimpse of pre-Civil War American life. Rosalie House is an historic mansion in Natchez, Mississippi, built in a trend-setting Federal style which later influenced other architecture in the area, and is the main attraction in the small town of Natchez.

Rosalie House was built in 1823 for a wealthy cotton broker, and was originally lived in by the Little family, but it served many purposes throughout American history, including its function as Union headquarters during the American Civil War. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1989, and it is presently owned by the Daughters of the American Revolution. Much effort has been involved in restoring and preserving the mansion in order to show visitors how Rosalie House once looked over 100 years ago. Rosalie House was also interestlingly one of the filming locations for Disney's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, based on Mark Twain's novel.

Tourists will notice Rosalie House's wide galleries, colonial fanlights, Doric columns, antique clothing, paintings, and beautiful Bicentennial Garden surrounded by an antique picket fence, all overlooking a fantastic view of the Mississippi River. One of the most famous events of the year is the "Great Mississippi River Balloon Competition and Festival" in October. Other special events at Rosalie House include exhibits and weddings.

Regular tours of Rosalie House and the Rosalie Mansion Gardens occur daily beginning at 9 am until 4:30 pm. Tickets can be purchased at the Rosalie Mansion Gift Shop, where you can also pick up a souvenir. During the Natchez Pilgrimage Season in the spring and fall, tickets are harder to acquire, and must be purchased at the Natchez Pilgrimage Tours. The burial site of the 17th Century French Soldiers and Settlers in the Bicentennial Gardens at Rosalie House is free to the public year round.

At Rosalie House, there is no place for formal lodging or dining, but if you plan to stick around the Natchez area, we recommend a few places to stay and eat. Natchez is a great place for authentic southern food, and for a hearty bite to eat you may enjoy Biscuits and Blues, Breaud's Seafood and Steak, or for some fresh river fish, try Berry's Seafood Restaurant.

Overnight accommodations are also available in Natchez, including the cozy atmosphere at Bailey's Carriage House, Devereaux Shields House, Antebellum Music Room Bed and Breakfast, Dunleith Historic Inn, Mark Twain Guest House, all of which provide southern hospitality in a fun, yet historic environment. After all, the Mississippi River has seen its share of American history!

Natchez is located in the southwest corner of Mississippi. Travelers can find Natchez by car off US Highways 61 and 84. Alternatively, you can travel Huck Finn style down the Mississippi River, but we suggest that the car ride might be faster!
